Amazon Prime Day 2020, which starts next week, will feature exclusive offers and savings across Amazon devices, fashion, grocery, toys, furniture, everyday essentials, school supplies and more. Here is what you need to know to get the best deals.
“In the midst of an unprecedented year, we’re committed to making this the most successful Prime Day ever for our small businesses, and we’re excited for Prime members worldwide to discover new ways to support local entrepreneurs and save big on everything thfey need and love,” said Jeff Wilke, Amazon CEO, Worldwide Consumer. “This year’s Prime Day is the perfect opportunity for Prime members to get their holiday shopping done early from the comfort of their home — and to have more time to spend with their families and friends throughout the season.”
There was a delay in Prime Day, which is usually in July, many of the Prime Day deals from the past are being offered this year.
“Amazon is offering a lot of the same early deals and cash-back promos we’ve seen during pre-Prime Day deals in the past, so it stands to reason they won’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to the deals of the main event,” said McGrath.
She added that there is usually a pattern to the Prime Day discounts offered by Amazon.
“The biggest discounts will be on Amazon’s own proprietary smart speakers, smart displays and Fire TV products, which will be 30% to 50% off, mostly likely. It will probably offer up to 50% off clothing, which it’s done consistently in the past. We don’t expect any major changes there,” said McGrath.
“For a change, we might see Amazon emphasizing its everyday and staple deals more, knowing that shoppers might be looking for bargain pantry essentials more than they’re looking for, say, a new TV this year. We might also see some superior home deals, because Amazon may try to play into the fact that lots of people are redecorating and remodeling the home they’ve been spending so much time in,” she added.
WHEN TO SHOP
The shopping event will begin Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 3 a.m., and will and end Wednesday, Oct. 14, at at 3 a.m.
Prime members can expect the convenience of unlimited fast, free shipping to their door, garage or even the car, as the membership program has evolved to predominantly one-day delivery.
CORONAVIRUS IMPACT
With the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic impacting every aspect of life, Prime Day was no different.
Amazon confirmed early on during the pandemic that it was experiencing warehouse delays and shortages of products from retailers. According to a New York Times report, Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s chief executive, delayed Prime Day, which is usually held in the summer.
SMALL BUSINESSES
Prime Day shoppers can support small- and medium-sized businesses. This year, Amazon is offering a $10 credit for Prime members to use if you purchase a select small business product between Sept. 28 and Oct. 12.
To make it easier for customers to support small businesses, Amazon has created new curated collections to connect customers with local small businesses. Visit amazon.com/supportsmall to start shopping collections in the United States based on product category, business location and owner profiles.
Throughout Prime Day, Amazon Live will spotlight deals curated from small businesses across the giant retailer’s website. Viewers will also have the opportunity to hear directly from business owners, learn more about their products, and shop their Prime Day deals during a reoccurring segment called Small Business Showcase.
SNEAK PEEK AND MORE
McGrath offered these helpful hints when shopping Prime Day:
Consumers need to check deals throughout the event: Prime Day deals will be revealed all the way up until the very end. Consumers need to check back every day and keep tabs on lightning deals throughout the event
Shop these “alternative sales:” Other retailers are capitalizing on the Prime Day hype by throwing their own sales the same week. For example, Walmart is throwing what it’s calling the Big Save event, Target is throwing its Deal Days Sale and Kohl’s is offering 15% off from Oct. 9 to 18. If you don’t have a Prime membership and therefore can’t shop Prime Day, you can still cash in on deals.
Use Amazon’s app: The app has a deal-watching feature that lets you know when deals go live on products you’re interested in.
Concentrate on Amazon’s brands: Plenty of sellers will be offering Prime Day deals. But be sure to watch Amazon’s in-house brands, which are likely to get sweeping discounts of 40% off or more.
Don’t forget about subscriptions and services: Prime Day isn’t just about physical products. Amazon is known for offering discounts on Audible, Amazon Music Unlimited, Prime Video channels and more. In the past, it has also offered discounts to new Amazon Fresh users. So if you’ve been wanting to try any of those services, Prime Day is a good time to do so for less.
