The Apple Watch Series 6 is the successor to the Series 5, which came out in 2019. The smartwatch has not yet been announced, but on this page, we will keep you informed of all the rumors and expectations.
Apple Watch Series 6 in brief
Simultaneously with the iPhone 12, Apple is unveiling a new watch: the Apple Watch Series 6. The successor to the Series 5 mainly promises to add health functions and would include a sleep tracker and fitness app. These are the main features of the Apple Watch 6 in brief:
- Much the same design as the Series 5
- Runs out of the box on watchOS 7
- More health functions, such as a sleep tracker
- Available from autumn 2020
- The expected entry price of $589
Expected Apple Watch Series 6 price
The Apple Watch Series 6 resembles its predecessor in many ways and is aimed at the same target audience. Just like every year, the new model gets a little better, there are some nice health functions and the watch comes in two sizes.
We, therefore, expect the Series 6’s price tag to remain roughly the same. This means the following for the expected Apple Watch Series 6 price.
- Apple Watch Series 6 40mm: $589
- Apple Watch Series 6 44mm: $565
Apple Watch 6 will likely release in September
The Apple Watch 6 will be announced at an event simultaneously with the iPhone 2020 series. The unveiling may take place completely online, as Apple did during WWDC in June 2020, but it is also possible that the unveiling will be held for a (small) audience.
Regardless, we expect the unveiling of the new Apple products to “just” take place in September, like every year. However, the company recently indicated that the new iPhones will arrive in stores “a few weeks” later than usual. This may also apply to the successor to the Apple Watch 5.

Expected Apple Watch Series 6 features
The Series 6 probably builds on the foundation of the Watch 5. So expect a full-screen display that’s always on, multiple functions for exercise, and new ways to monitor and improve your health.
Prevent panic attacks
Apple sees the Watch as a health accessory. For example, since Series 4 you can make heart videos and the new Apple Watch takes that a little bit further. According to rumors, the new watch will have a pulse oximeter built-in. This is able to measure the oxygen level in your blood.
This is useful because in this way the watch can recognize panic attacks at an early stage and warn the wearer of them. Moreover, such a pulse oximeter shows how your stress levels are in the long term.
Digital Crown receives Touch ID
Furthermore, the Apple Watch 6 would get a Touch ID fingerprint scanner in the Digital Crown. That way you can unlock the watch by placing your finger on the button. Incidentally, Face ID facial recognition would pass over the Apple Watch: according to rumors, that function is reserved for iPhones.
Even more waterproof
The Apple Watch Series 5 can go up to 50 meters underwater, but the Series 6 probably adds a few more. According to several sources, the new Apple Watch would be even more waterproof than previous models, so you could even scuba dive with it.
Larger battery
watchOS 7, the new software for Apple Watches that will be released in 2020, is removing Force Touch. This function unlocks additional functions when you press the watch screen extra firmly. For example, you can directly adjust a watch face.
Because there is no need to consider Force Touch materials in the Series 6 case, the battery size is likely to improve. However, the actual battery life remains about the same. Rumors state that the battery will only increase a few mAh. In addition, the screen would become slightly larger, which in turn requires more energy.
No micro-LED
Speaking of the screen, it doesn’t look like the Apple Watch Series 6 is getting a micro-LED screen. It is no secret that Apple has been working on this alternative to OLED screens for years, but the innovation is (for now) ignoring the noise of the Watch.
The iPhone maker has been working on micro-LED for years and would eventually want to equip all products with such a screen. Micro-LED is thinner, more energy-efficient, and produces a lot of clear images on the screen than OLED, the current technology of Apple Watches.
WatchOS 7 on board
The Apple Watch 6 runs out of the box on watchOS 7, the software update that is also coming to the Series 3, Series 4 and Series 5. The new version introduces, among other things, a Fitness app with new exercises, sleep tracker that keeps track of how good your night’s sleep is and lets you create multiple complications.
You can also finally share watch faces with each other and watchOS 7 has a function that helps you to wash your hands properly and thoroughly. Check the video below for an overview of all new watchOS 7 features.
