The dark mode is often discussed controversially. Some consider the dark theme to be completely overrated, others like to use it frequently so that they can take advantage of an OLED display or simply not be so dazzled by the smartphone in the evening or in dark environments.
Google Chat with a dark mode
The Google Chat chat app receives a dark theme. Google reports that the change will roll out for Android and iOS phones starting today. Google indicates that the dark theme is a popular feature that is often requested by users: “The theme provides a better viewing experience in low light because the brightness is reduced.”

When I opened the chat app this morning, that was the first thing I noticed. We use this chat app as the main communication tool for editors, so a dark theme is very welcome if we want to discuss something new in the evenings.
Google also shares the image below in its announcement. This shows another FAB (Floating Action Button) icon. The plus sign has been replaced by a button with the text ‘New chat’. In addition, your name is displayed at the top of the app.

Availability
Dark mode will be rolled out from now on but is already visible to everyone in the editorial office. There is no button in the app to enable or disable the theme. You activate dark mode in Google Chat as soon as the system theme of your phone is also set to dark. Hopefully, this update heralds the upcoming Gmail update. That update makes it possible to use various Google services, including Google Chat, from one screen in Gmail.
