Google has been working with Mozilla, the developers behind the Firefox browser, for years. The collaboration is mainly aimed at securing a place for Google in the internet browser. Despite the unstable situation with Firefox, the deal has been extended yet again.

Default search engine
Google is the default search engine on many browsers, not only Google Chrome. For example, there is a deal between Mozilla and Google, with which the search giant has obtained a ‘first place’ in Firefox. The current deal of the two companies is due to expire at the end of 2020, which has since been canceled. According to ZDNet, negotiations between Google and Mozilla have now been concluded – the new deal should be valid until 2023.
With the deal, Google is set as the default search engine in the Firefox browser’s desktop and mobile apps. Google would pay between $400 and $450 million for the preferred position, although no official details have been disclosed. Firefox spokesperson Justin O’Kelly told The Verge that they “recently renewed the partnership, and the relationship hasn’t changed.”
Google is an important partner for Mozilla: a large part of its income comes from parties that enter into a partnership. In the US and Europ Google is the top search engine Outside Europe, Yandex (Russia), and Baidu (China), among others, work together with the browser developer. In spite of this, revenues were set to decline, as the company announced last week that it would have to “lay off 250 employees,” a quarter of its workforce.
Firefox market share
The market share of the Firefox browser has also declined significantly in recent years; in 2020 the browser will be able to occupy about 4.26 percent of the browser market. In comparison, Google has a 65.89 percent market share with the Chrome browser. One of the reasons is that the browser has been included on all Android devices for years; Google is now obliged to offer consumers a ‘free browser choice’.

Apart from a free browser choice, Google must leave the choice of the search engine to the user.
