Google is going to halve the percentage it charges developers for the sale of apps in the Google Play Store. As of July 1, the companies now pay a 15 percent fee each year on the first million dollars in revenue. For every dollar above that, the search giant continues to charge as much as 30% commission.
According to Google, this measure halves the percentage of commission they have to pay for 99 percent of developers. Apple previously made a similar decision. The only difference is that the maker of the iPhone only charges a lower percentage for companies with a turnover of up to a million dollars.
There is much debate about the percentage that Apple and Google charge for sales in their app stores. Developer Epic Games, known as ‘Fortnite’, has gone to court because the game maker believes that Apple and Google have an illegal monopoly and are guilty of abuse of power.
Apple does not allow apps to be made available through its own websites. Google allows that, but makes it “terribly difficult,” said Epic Games. Epic Games ‘series of lawsuits against Apple and Google followed the removal of’ Fortnite ‘from their download stores after Epic confronted them by knowingly violating the download stores’ rules.
