Samsung’s current Galaxy Watch is from 2018 and has since been succeeded by the Galaxy Watch Active (2). During Samsung Unpacked, Samsung unveiled the third generation of the Galaxy Watch, the Galaxy Watch 3, with many hardware improvements.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3
From the Samsung Galaxy Watch in 2018 to the Galaxy Watch 3 in 2020? Whatever the exact reason, it is striking, to say the least. When Samsung first showed the Galaxy Watch in public spheres, it was clear that the Gear naming was gone.

It was replaced by the Galaxy Watch series, in which a Galaxy Watch Active and Watch Active 2 appeared in addition to the Galaxy Watch. For the Active series, these smartwatches are specifically aimed at the ‘active’, while the non-Active series attracts a more general audience.
That was already visible in the design of the first generation of the Galaxy Watch, and the Watch 3 seems to have been little tinkered with. Around the screen we still find the – physically – rotating bezel and on the right side we find two (round) buttons.
However, these buttons do not serve as rotating buttons, since that functionality is already incorporated around the screen. Speaking of the screens on the smartwatches, they will be available in two sizes: 1.2 and 1.4-inch. That depends on the version you buy: the Galaxy Watch 3 will be available in 41mm and 45mm variants.
Outdated hardware?
The screens come from Samsung factories and use Super AMOLED technology – the screens are coated with Gorilla Glass DX to prevent them from getting damaged. If you’re interested in the Watch 3’s specs, here we go: an Exynos 9110 chipset is included.

The same chipset was already used on the Galaxy Watch in 2018. On the Galaxy Watch 3, the chipset will support 1 GB RAM and 8 GB storage memory, and 768 MB RAM and 4 GB storage memory in the previous Galaxy Watch watches.
Samsung uses 3 batteries of 247 mAh and 340 mAh on the Galaxy Watch for the 41mm and 45mm versions respectively. Charging the batteries is done via a wireless Qi charger that comes with the smartwatches, but it is also possible to use your own Qi charger.
You do not have to put the smartwatch on the charger every day, which makes it suitable for measuring your night rhythm (such as your REM sleep). Outside of your sleep rhythm, the Watch 3 also offers around 39 sport modes, it can measure your heart rate and the smartwatch offers built-in GPS.

According to Samsung, a function called ‘ECG’ is present (electrocardiogram), with which the rhythm of your heart can be monitored. Samsung previously announced this function on the Watch Active 2 – however, the function never became widely available on that smartwatch. Samsung is also partly dependent on the permission of health services to activate the ECG function.
